Yavapai Dominates Gateway with 28 Runs in a 2 Game Sweep
The Roughrider softball team erupted for 28 runs Thursday afternoon in an ACCAC doubleheader sweep over Gateway Community College, 20-0 and 8-0 at Bill Valllely Field. Yavapai improves their league leading conference record to 22-2 and hold a 26-3 overall mark. Gateway falls to 4- 20 in the ACCAC and 6-22 on the year.
In the opener, YC had five different players hit home runs including two grand slams by Raelynn Rios and Jaydee Boursaw. Savana Ramirez, Andrea Sotelo and Mahina Chong each hit homer.
The game was never in doubt as the Roughriders scored six runs in the first inning, one in the second, seven in the third and six in the fourth.
Amy Robinson was lights on the mound surrendering only one hit while striking out 4.
The scoring slowed down in the second game for the home team but the pitching remained strong as Santana Parra threw blanks. The freshman from New Mexico threw five innings allowing 5 hits and striking out 4.
Offensively, Mikayla Newham was a perfect 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Andrea Sotelo was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Jaydee Boursaw was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Mercedes Rothwell was 1 for 2 with a home run, 2 runs batted in and a run scored.
Yavapai entertains South Mountain Community College (8-20, 6-18) on Saturday, March 18th in ACCAC action. In their first meeting of the year, the Green and Gold swept a doubleheader in Phoenix, 9-0 and 9-3. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
