Roughriders Score 28 Runs in Doubleheader Split
The Roughrider baseball team took a break from ACCAC play Friday afternoon to host Langley Blaze, a developmental team from Victoria, British Columbia. YC split a doubleheader with the visitors winning the opener 19-4 and stumbling in the nightcap, 5-4. YC is now 19-13 on the year.
There was offense aplenty for the home team in the opening game. YC gave up one run in the opening inning but responded with five runs in their half of the first. The big inning came in the fifth inning when the Roughriders tallied 9 runs. Carlos Viera had a big day from the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles, four runs scored and four runs batted in. Adbiel Morales was 2 for 5 with a double and five RBI’s. Jaxxon Fagg and Matt Mendibles each had two hits.
Avery Weems got the victory on the bump throwing 3.1 innings striking out six.
In the second game, Yavapai started hot scoring two runs on a Jaxxon Fagg homerun in the first frame. However, Langley Blaze scored 1 in the second, 1 in the third and two in the fourth to take a three-run lead. YC attempted a comeback in sixth inning with a two-run home run by Adbiel Morales but that was all the Riders could manage the rest of the way.
Yavapai resumes league play on Tuesday, March 21st as they travel to league leading Phoenix College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM. The Riders will return to the friendly confines of Roughrider Park on Friday, March 24th as they entertain Scottsdale Community College in a single 9-inning game.
