Yavapai Splits Games with #2 Phoenix College

The Roughrider softball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with the NJCAA Division II #2 ranked team, Phoenix College. YC dropped the first game 8-0 and bounced back in the nightcap winning 5-2. Yavapai is now 7-2 on the year and 3-1 in ACCAC action.

The offense was non-existent in the opener as the Riders got blanked for the first time this year. Yavapai gave up two runs in the second inning and six runs in the third inning in the run-rule shortened game.

Andrea Sotelo continued her torrid hitting going 2 for 2 with a double. Raelynn Rios and Mahina Chong had the only other hits for the Roughriders.

In the second game, the Roughriders defeated Phoenix 5-2 after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at two with Roughriders batting in the top of the fifth when there was an error, scoring one run.

Yavapai took an early lead in the first inning. Rios doubled on a 1-0 count scoring the game’s first run.

YC sealed the deal in the seventh on back to back home runs from Karissa Pena and Rios.

The Roughriders had ten hits in the game with Rios and Chong each collecting multiple hits. Chong and Rios all had two hits to lead the Green and Gold.

The Roughriders make their Bill Vallely debut on Tuesday, February 7th as they entertain the Pumas from Paradise Valley Community College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
