Baseball Splits Opening Day Games

The defending National Champion Roughrider baseball team split a pair of games on Friday with Yavapai College beating College of Eastern Utah in the season opener, 9-2 and dropping the second game, 7-4 to College or Southern Nevada.

In the first game, YC scored three runs in the fourth scoring two runs on a two-run single by Jaxxon Fagg and a walk by Trevor Edior.

The game was back-and-forth heading into the fourth, with four lead changes.

Fagg racked up three RBIs on three hits for the Roughriders.

Jeddediah Fagg got the win in relief for Yavapai College. Fagg pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed no runs.

Yavapai scored two runs in the fifth inning, and then followed it up with two more in the ninth.

In the nightcap, Yavapai jumped out to an early lead, but was unable to hold on and lost 7-4 to Southern Nevada.

Jaxxon Fagg led the Roughriders offensive threat, as he got on base three times in the game. He scored one run and had one RBI. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the eighth inning.

Andrew Gross looked sharp on the mound. Southern Nevada managed just two hits off of the righty, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two during his 3 2/3 innings of work.

The game’s last lead went to Southern Nevada thanks to a fifth inning rally that saw four runs cross the plate.

Yavapai continues play on Saturday against Arizona Western College in a non-conference affair and Colorado Northwestern Community College in the last game of the day.
