Volleyball Adds 2 for 2017 With NLI Signings
Yavapai College Volleyball and Head Coach Zach Shaver are excited to announce the addition of 2 new Roughriders who will join the squad in 2017. Both Nynke de Vries and Audrey Rees signed a National Letter of Intent finalizing their commitment to Yavapai College.
Nynke de Vries is a 5’10 outside hitter from Urmond, Netherlands where she won multiple championships in the Dutch National League – 2nd division. Her club team ADC Stein was the best in 2010, 2012, & 2015. Nynke and her team also qualified for the Dutch Youth National Championships in 2012. She pursued her high school career at Het College Weert starting in 2012 when she was selected for the Dutch Volleyball Association Regional Talent Center (RTC) in Weert. Nynke has not yet decided and her intended major while pursuing her degree at Yavapai College. Nynke has also competed in beach volleyball. In 2014 she reached the quarter finals of the Dutch Beach Youth Championships (U16). “Nynke will bring a strong and diversified attack from the outside position. Her high level international experience and her commitment to volleyball from such a young age will help her transition collegiate volleyball in the U.S.” said Coach Shaver. “We are excited to see what she will contribute to our program!”
Audrey Rees is a 6′ right side hitter from Flagstaff, AZ where she played for Coconino High School and Flagstaff Ascent VBC. As a Panther she was on the Varsity squad for 3 years and helped her team to the Arizona State playoffs all 3 years. Audrey also accomplished both of those feats on the sand volleyball courts for Coconino High School and coach Kerry Kriesel. As a sophomore she earned her way onto her club’s 18’s team and as a starter helped lead them to the Junior Olympic National Championship Tournament. Audrey intends to major in Business Management while pursuing her degree at Yavapai College.”Audrey is a natural fit for the right side hitter position in our system. She can attack aggressively at different tempos and has the potential to be an intimidating blocker.” stated Coach Shaver. “She is a fun player to watch and her on court energy is contagious!”
Nynke and Audrey will join 10 returning sophomores in 2017. Seven of the ten returning players saw significant playing time in 2016 as the squad reached the District B semi-finals. The Roughriders will open the 2017 season at home against Mesa CC on Wednesday August 23rd as they look to avenge their 2-3 loss to the Thunderbirds from this past season.
