Roughriders Survive a Battle With the Bears

On Yavapai College “Staff Appreciation” night the Roughriders gave the crowd all the volleyball possible. After a solid performance in set 1 (25-18) the Roughriders struggled in the next 2 sets losing by scores of 22-25 and 20-25. However, with their backs against the wall the squad started set 4 with a bang and jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back finishing the set 25-15. Lately Yavapai has performed well in 5th sets and continued to do so tonight even though Phoenix College challenged them the entire set. The decisive 5th set score was 15-13 and the team hit a solid .208.

2016-volleyball-9-23-4Defensively Yavapai was led by libero Hannah Semon (pictured at right) who finished with 29 digs. Outside hitter Iva Alebic, setter Jordan Tilley, and defensive specialist Lauren Ulibarri all chipped in with double digit kills. At the net Yavapai was solid totaling 11 block assists. Right side hitter Kaytlin Yost was tops with 5 and middle blocker Baylie Stephens was 2nd with 4.

Offensively it was a night of ups and downs for the Roughriders. In set 4 the team hit .484 and in set 2 they could only manage .109. Alebic led the team with 21 kills and Yost was 2nd with 18. Middle blocker Bailey Anderson was extremely effective hitting .625 with 11 kills on 16 attempts with only 1 error.

With the win Yavapai improves to 9-4 in the ACCAC and 16-9 overall. The win also marks the team’s 8th consecutive victory. The Roughriders will return to the hardwood on Friday at 7:00 pm as they host the Vaqueras of Central Arizona College. Prior to the match Yavapai will pay tribute to it’s 4 sophomores and a reception will follow the match at Rider Diner. The 2 teams will then do battle again on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
