Roughriders Fall in a Close Battle at NJCAA World Series

2016 Baseball WS 2Sixteen hits were not enough for the Yavapai College Roughriders Monday afternoon as it lost a shootout, 10-8, to the Cisco College Wranglers at Suplizio Field.

Things looked bleak for the Roughriders after giving up five runs in the third inning. YC responded with 2 runs of their own in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-2. The eighth inning provided the fireworks for each team.

Brock Ephan led off the inning with a sharp single to leftfield. Gavin Johns flew out to rightfield and Turlte Kuhaulua reached base on an error. Dylan Enwiller followed that with a single to right field loading the bases for pinch hitter Caden Goldy. Goldby delivered with a single to left field scoring Ephan and Kuhaulua making the score 5-4. With two outs, Ramsey Romano crushed a pitch to the bleachers in left field scoring Enwiller and Guaragna, running for Goldby, and the first lead of the game for the Riders, 7-5.

However, the Wranglers answered the Roughriders with five runs of their own to regain the lead, 10-7.

One Yavapai College run crossed the plate in the top half of the ninth, making the score 10-8. Gavin Johns doubled to the right field corner and Kuhaulua chased him home with a single to centerfield. That was the only run the Riders could muster.

Yavapai outhit the Wranglers 16-12 led by Christian Maggi and Dylan Enwiller with three hits apiece.

Yavapai still has life in the NJCAA World Series as they take on Cowley College in an elimination game on Tuesday, May 31st at 11:00 AM (Colorado Time). YC must win 5 more games for their fourth National Title. In 1977 and 1993, Yavapai came up through the loser’s bracket to win the National Championship. Tomorrow’s game will be streamed live at http://www.njcaatv.com/landing/index.
