Volleyball Releases 2016 Schedule
The 2016 Yavapai volleyball schedule will test the Roughriders from start to finish. Coming off of their 1st ever District C Championship and appearance in the National Championship Tournament (16 teams) in 2015, head coach Zach Shaver has constructed a schedule which will challenge the Roughriders at every turn.
Of the team’s 28 matches, only 11 will be at home in the friendly confines of Walraven Gymnasium in which the Roughriders were an impressive 12-1 in 2015. Yavapai’s only loss at home came at the hands of Lee College (Houston, TX) during the Roughrider Invitational. The team will get a chance to avenge the loss to Lee College early in the 2016 season as they meet up with the Rebels in Las Vegas, NV on August 27th at the Coyote Classic, hosted by the College of Southern Nevada. While in Las Vegas, Yavapai will also take on perennial contenders Snow College (UT) and Sheridan College (CO).
The Roughriders will also attend the Star Invitational hosted by the 2015 NJCAA DI National Champions, College of Southern Idaho. While in Twin Falls, Yavapai will play 3 teams who were ranked in the top 6 of the coaches poll at the end of 2015; Salt Lake CC (#6), Northwest College (#3), and College of Southern Idaho (#2). CSI won their 10th National Championship in 2015 in a thrilling 5 set victory over Western Nebraska CC.
On September 2nd and 3rd, Yavapai will host the 3rd annual Roughrider Invitational in which a total of 8 teams will participate. The Roughriders will play 3 matches against teams traveling to Prescott from outside of Arizona. On Friday, Yavapai will play the Coyotes from College of Southern Nevada, and then finish the night against the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern. On Saturday, Yavapai will play their 4th match in 3 days as they take on the Broncos of New Mexico Military Institute.
Another highlight in the 2016 season is the 4th annual Crosstown Battle Against Breast Cancer on October 5th at 7:00 pm. The match will again pit crosstown rivals Yavapai College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University against each other for a great cause. The Roughriders and Eagles have donated over $11,000 over the past 3 years to the Breast Care Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott Valley, AZ. The 2 teams will again look to raise awareness along with donations to combat breast cancer as they battle on the campus of ERAU.
The 16 matches which make up the team’s conference (ACCAC) schedule will start on August 24th against the Thunderbirds of Mesa College and conclude with the Matadors of Arizona Western College. The first and final matches of the regular season will both be on the road, however the conference schedule is balanced with 8 home and 8 away matches.
In 2015, the Roughriders earned the #1 seed and the right to host the District C Championship because their record against ACCAC DI opponents was a perfect 9-0. Yavapai will again focus on the key match ups against Arizona Western College, Eastern Arizona College, and Central Arizona College in order to earn a 2nd consecutive post-season birth.
For those wishing to get a sneak peak at the 2016 Roughriders, Yavapai will host a scrimmage against ERAU on August 16th at 6:00 pm. New for 2016 will be the inaugural “Meet the Roughriders” held on Saturday, August 20th. The event will feature a cookout outside of Walraven Gym, give aways, a chance to meet the new and returning Roughriders, and conclude with an intra-squad scrimmage at 6:00 pm.
