Baseball Repeats as West District Champions Via a Walk Off Grand Slam
For the second consecutive year, the Roughrider baseball team is the NJCAA Western District Champions! YC earned the honor by outslugging Western Nevada College Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion. Dylan Enwiller’s walk-off blast boosted the Green and Gold to a 20-16 win over Western Nevada College on Saturday.
Enwiller racked up four RBIs on one hit. He hit a grand slam in the ninth inning.
The two teams combined for 36 runs and 42 hits, including 15 extra base hits. Skippers of the two teams seemingly emptied their bullpens in search of the win, as there were seven pitchers used in the game.
YC hit four home runs in the win. Home runs came when Gavin Johns homered in the third inning, Brock Ephan homered in the fourth inning, Caden Goldby homered in the fourth inning, and Enwiller homered in the ninth inning.
Andrew Gross got the win for the Riders. He allowed two runs over one inning. He struck out two, walked none and surrendered three hits.
The Roughrider offense easily handled Western Nevada pitching as seven hitters combined for 17 hits, 16 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
In the top of the first, Western Nevada grabbed the early lead, 1-0 on a solo home run.
Yavapai answered Western Nevada’s top inning with one run of its own in the first. YC scored on an RBI single by Ephan.
Western Nevada matched its one-run third inning with one more in the eighth.
After a quick strike from Western Nevada, Yavapai responded with four runs in the third scoring on a wild pitch, an RBI double by Ephan, and a two-run home run by Johns.
Western Nevada brought home two runs in the fourth inning, and matched that run total in the ninth.
Yavapai College quickly matched Western Nevada’s strong inning with a 10-run inning of its own in the fourth. YC scored on a solo home run by Goldby, an RBI single by Ramsey Romano, an RBI double by Nate Easley, a two-run home run by Ephan, , an RBI single by Nikko Delgado, a two-run double by Rashaan Kuhaulua, and a fielder’s choice.
With the victory, Yavapai advances to its second consecutive trip to the NJCAA World Series. It will be their ninth trip to the Championship Tournament. Yavapai will begin tourney action on Saturday, May 28th at 7:30 PM (Colorado time) against the winner of the South Central District.
