Baseball Knocks in 13 Runs in Post-Season Victory
The Roughrider baseball team came from behind to claim a first round victory in the Western Distric Championship. It was a tight game until Yavapai scored eight late runs for the 13-5 victory over the Pioneers from Miles Community College on Thursday at Trinidad,CO in the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Western District Championship..
Nicko Ortega got the win in relief for YC. Ortega pitched two innings and allowed two runs.
Yavapai hit four home runs on the day. Nate Easley homered in the third inning, Jaxxon Fagg homered in the fourth inning, Dylan Enwiller homered in the eighth inning, and Brock Ephan homered in the eighth inning.
Easley, Fagg, Ephan and Enwiller helped lead the Roughriders. They combined for nine hits and 10 RBIs.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Riders never trailed after scoring five runs in the seventh on a three-run double by Ephan, a fielder’s choice, and an RBI single by Turtle Kuhaulua.
Yavapai advances to the next round to face the winner of the Western Nevada/ Trinidad State game taking place this afternoon. The winner’s game will be played on Friday at 3:00 PM Colorado time, 2:00 PM Arizona time.
