Roughriders Come From Behind to Win in Extra Innings
It took 10 innings, but he Roughrider softball team managed to put away Walters State 3-2 on Wednesday at St. George, UT in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. It is the first victory at the National Tournament since 2011.
With the score tied at two in the tenth inning, Karissa Pena came to the plate and singled, scoring Dusty Durham. Earlier in the inning, Durham knocked a single to score two runs to tie the game.
Amy Robinson recorded the win for YC. She allowed two runs over 10 innings. Robinson struck out five, walked one and gave up 10 hits.
Walters State broke a scoreless tie in the tenth inning, pushing two runs across.
In their half of the tenth inning, Jessica Mesa led off with a walk. Nicole Matta followed that up with another walk. Jocilyn Ellis executed the perfect sacrifice moving the runners to third and second. After a flyout by Andrea Sotelo, Durham singled to left field scoring Mesa and Matta to tie the game. Durham advanced to second on the play. Sydney Forray drew a walk bringing Pena to the plate. With the count at 2 balls and 1 strike, Shorty singled sharply to right field for the game winner knocking in Durham.
YC advances to the next round to face the #1 seeded Tyler Junior College, 4-0 winners over Georgia Military College. The game will begin at 5:00 PM Utah time, 4:00 PM Arizona time.
