Roughriders Are Region 1 Champions

The Roughrider baseball team won their ninth NJCAA Region I Championship Friday afternoon at Roughrider Park over Cochise College, 6-2. The title is the first back-to-back region crowns since 1979. Yavapai improves their overall record to 41-19. Cochise concludes their season with a 36-25 mark.

YC and Cochise exchanged the lead four times on Friday, but Yavapai ended up on top with the 6-2 victory.

The Roughriders pulled out the win thanks to a strong fifth inning. The Green and Gold went up for good on a two-run home run by Caden Goldby scoring Jaxxon Fagg.

YC was led by a flawless day at the dish by Nate Easley, who went 3 for 3 against Cochise pitching. He doubled in the fifth inning and singled in the first and seventh innings.

Joseph Romero handled the Apache lineup with ease, racking up 10 strikeouts. Romero allowed two earned runs, four hits and three walks over eight innings. For his Herculean effort, Romero was named the series MVP.

Yavapai now advances to the NJCAA Western District Finals at a site yet to be determined with the winner moving on to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, CO.
