Baseball Wins Opening Game of Region Championship Series
In typical Roughrider fashion, the Yavapai College baseball team came from behind to win the NJCAA Region I Championship Series opener Thursday afternoon over Cochise College, 8-7. YC will be looking to clinch the Region title Friday afternoon.
Yavapai fell into a hole early as the Apaches scored 7 runs in the opening frame. The Apaches chased Yavapai starter Chase Beal, pinning him with 4 runs on 2 hits. Yavapai turned to Hayden Durkiewicz to stop the bleeding. The freshman lefthander baffled Cochise, striking out 10 batters, allowing three earned runs, six hits and two walks over eight innings.
Andrew Gross got the victory. He tossed one inning of shutout ball. He struck out none, walked none and surrendered one hit.1 inning pitched.
It was a good day at the plate for Nate Easley. Easley went 3-5, drove in one and scored two runs. He doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the seventh and ninth innings.
The Roughrider offense chipped away at the early deficit scoring a run in the first, two in the fourth, one in the seventh and four in the ninth.
In the decisive ninth inning, with one out, Turtle Kuhaulua knocked a solo home run over the left field fence. Ramsey Romano walked, Dylan Enwiller singled, Easley singled to center loading the bases. Brock Ephan walked forcing Romano home. A balk by the Cochise pitcher scored Enwiller to tie the game and pinch hitter Christian Maggi singled to center easily scoring Easley for the come from behind victory.
The Roughriders look to secure their second consecutive NJCAA Region I Title on Friday at Roughrider Park. The first pitch will be thrown at 2:00 PM.
