Baseball Wins Playoff Series Against South Mountain

The Yavapai College baseball team needed some late game heroics to beat the Cougars from South Mountain Community College Friday afternoon, 3-2. With the victory, YC advances to the NJCAA Region I Division I Championship Series against an opponent yet to be determined.

Nate Easley drove in the go-ahead run to give the Roughriders the lead in the eighth inning. Turtle Kuhaulua singled to get on base in the eighth. He then went from first to third on a double by Ramsey Romano. Kuhaulua and Ramsey scored on Easley’s single.

Joseph Romero baffled South Mountain, striking out eight batters. Romero allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk over 7 1/3 innings.

Nicko Ortega got the win in relief for the Riders. Ortega pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed no runs. Andrew Gross retired the side in the ninth to get the save.

The top of the first saw South Mountain CC take an early lead, 1-0.

It didn’t take long for Yavapai College Roughriders Baseball to answer as it scored one run of its own in the second scoring on a sacrifice fly by Nikko Delgado.

The Roughriders await the winner of the Central Arizona College/Cochise College series. Central Arizona won the first game 4-3 and Cochise won today, 20-18. The third and final game will be on Saturday at Central Arizona College.
