Softball Dominates Opening Round Playoff Game
A great effort by Andrea Sotelo spurred Yavapai College softball team to a 7-3 win in the first round of the NJCAA Region I Division I Tournament over Arizona Western College on Friday at Thatcher.
Sotelo rocked the Matadors with three home runs. Andrea Sotelo went 3 for 4 in the game with four RBIs and three runs scored. She homered in the first, fifth, and sixth innings.
Amy Robinson recorded the win for the Roughriders. She allowed three runs over seven innings. She struck out four, walked one and surrendered nine hits.
YC stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring one run on a solo home run by Sotelo.
The Green and Gold increased its lead with three runs in the sixth. Jocilyn Ellis singled, bringing home Nicole Matta to start the inning. That was followed up by Sotelo’s two-run home run, scoring Ellis.
Three runs in the bottom of the sixth helped AWC close its deficit to 7-3.
Yavapai advances to the next round on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM to face the winner of the Eastern Arizona College/Central Arizona College game. Arizona Western College will play later this afternoon against the loser of the EAC/CAC game with the loser being eliminated.
