Hailey Welch Inks Her NLI for Yavapai Volleyball
Head volleyball coach Zach Shaver announced this morning that the Roughriders have completed their 2016 roster with signing of Hailey Welch. The 5’9″ standout outside hitter hails from Goodyear, AZ where she played for Estrella Foothills High School and White Tanks Mountain Volleyball Club.
While playing for the Wolves Hailey was a 4 time Varsity Letterman, as well as a 2 time AIA Scholar athlete. As a starting outside hitter she also earned 2015 Team MVP, 2014 All Section Team, and 2014 Buckeye Tournament All Tournament Team.
Coach Shaver stated “We were looking for one more quality player to complete our 2016 roster and we definitely found that person in Hailey Welch! We knew just a few minutes after she stepped on the floor with our team in late April that we had found a hidden gem late in the recruiting season. Hailey posses great ball control and is a well rounded attacker. Most recruits struggle a little when they practice with our team but not Hailey, she exceeded our expectations in practice and I anticipate that she will be in the mix among our other 3 outside hitters as we look to solidify a starting line up in late August. She is an aggressive attacker when the opportunity presents itself but she also shows restraint and makes good decisions when the block in front of her is well formed. I assume she gets her competitive streak from her father (Mike Welch) who was a member of the NAU Lumberjacks Football Team and has gone on to coach football at the high school and collegiate level. Her confidence and execution while passing and playing defense is what set her apart from other recruits we were considering.”
In August Hailey will join 4 returning sophomores and 10 other freshmen as the Roughriders look to build on their success from 2015 which saw the team qualify for the NJCAA DI National Championship Tournament. Looking to repeat as Region 1 & District C Champions will be sophomores Iva Alebic (2nd Team All-American outside hitter ), Jordan Tilley (All-Region 1 Team setter), BreiAnna Grunig (outside hitter) and Kassidy Pomeroy (right side hitter). Joining Hailey Welch for their first taste of collegiate volleyball will be Lauren Ulibarri (libero from Flagstaff, AZ), Baylie Stephens (middle blocker from Oro Valley, AZ), Jailynn Butler (outside hitter from Parker, AZ), Bailey Anderson (middle blocker from Prescott, AZ), Kaytlin Yost (right side hitter from Fullerton, CA), Maddie McKeown (middle blocker from Juneau, AK), Juliette Tygret (setter from Gilbert, AZ), Hayley Huntsman (setter from Las Vegas, NV), Hannah Semon (libero from Oro Valley, AZ), and Santana Mestas (middle blocker from Pueblo, CO).
The Roughrider will open the 2016 season in Mesa, AZ as they take on the Thunderbirds, then the team will travel to play in the Coyote Classic in Las Vegas, NV. Yavapai’s first home match in Walraven Gym will be on September 1st as they take on the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona College. The 2016 home season will also feature the 3rd annual Roughrider Invitational (September 2nd & 3rd) and sophomore night on October 22nd as Yavapai plays Central Arizona College. The 4th annual Crosstown Battle Against Breast Cancer between Yavapai and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will take place on Wednesday October 5th at 7:00 pm on the ERAU campus. Please join the teams as they raise money to support the Breast Care Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott Valley.
