Baseball Starts Post-Season Series with a Win
The Yavapai College Roughriders beat South Mountain Community College on Thursday 13-6 at Roughrider Park in the first game of the NJCAA Region I Division I Playoffs. The best of three series continues Friday at 2:00 PM at Roughrider Park giving the Riders a chance to clinch the series.
Yavapai scored five runs in the third on a walk by Nikko Delgado, a bases loaded walk, a two-run error, and an RBI single by Ramsey Romano.
South Mountain couldn’t slow down Dylan Enwiller, who paced the Green and Gold with five hits. He doubled in the first inning, tripled in the fifth inning, and singled in the third and seventh innings.
Even though Chase Beal allowed six runs over eight innings he still recorded the victory. He struck out eight, walked two and surrendered 12 hits.
In the top of the first, South Mountain grabbed the early lead, 2-0. YC answered Cougar’s top inning with three runs of its own in the second scoring on a solo home run by Gavin Johns, an RBI double by Jonathan Villa, and a sacrifice fly by Turtle Kuhaulua.
After posting one run in the fourth, Yavapai again scored one in the fifth. In the fourth, the home team scored on a solo home run by Brock Ephan.
The Riders added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Enwiller kicked things off with a single, scoring Jaxxon Fagg. That was followed up by Nate Easley’s single, bringing home Kuhaulua and Enwiller.
In other Region I Division I playoff action, Central Arizona College beat Cochise College, 4-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.
