Roughriders Sweep Gila Monsters on the Road

On the final day of the regular season, the Roughrider baseball team swept a doubleheader from Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher Saturday afternoon, 4-2 and 1-0. Yavapai finishes the 2016 season with a 37-19 overall record and a 24-12 conference mark. Eastern Arizona falls to 26-30 on the year and 13-23 in the ACCAC.

The Gila Monsters weren’t able to overcome the big hole it dug itself into against the Roughriders. YC put three runs on the board in the third inning and added one more in the fourth. Eastern Arizona scored two runs in the fourth.

Joseph Romero got the win for the Green and Gold. He allowed two runs over five innings. He struck out five, walked three and surrendered five hits.

Andrew Gross put away the final six outs to record the save.

Gavin Johns and Brock Ephan each had two hits.

It was a great day for Hayden Durkiewicz, as Durkiewicz tossed eight scoreless innings to carry Yavapai to the 1-0 victory in the nightcap. The freshman lefthander scattered four hits and struck out 10. Nicko Ortega threw the final inning for the save.

The lone run of the game crossed the plate in the fifth inning on an error. Ramsey Romano was 2 for 3 for the Riders and Turtle Kuahaulua scored the only run.

Yavapai now prepares for the NJCAA Region I Playoffs. YC will host South Mountain Community College in a best-of-three series beginning on Thursday, May 5th with a single nine-inning game beginning at 2:00 PM at Roughrider Park.

The cost for admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. No passes will be valid.
