Roughriders Fall to the Bears

The Roughrider softball team dropped a doubleheader in the final day of the 2016 regular season. Yavapai lost to the NJCAA Division II #2 ranked team Phoenix College, 2-0 and 7-3. Yavapai concludes the regular season at 44-14 overall and 33-12 in the ACCAC standings.

The Roughiders failed to provide enough offense to beat Phoenix on Saturday despite Amy Robinson’s stellar six-inning performance. YC took the loss, 2-0.

Yavapai managed only 2 hits on the day. Sydney Forray and Andrea Sotelo each had a single.

Robinson gave up five hits and struck out eight.

In the nightcap, Yavapai fell to Phoenix College 7-3.

Dustie Durham ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. She lasted just three innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed four runs.

The top of the first saw the Roughriders take an early lead, 1-0. Yavapai’s threat began with a single by Nicole Matta. A groundout by Jocilyn Ellis then moved Matta from first to second.

Two runs in the top of the fifth helped the Lady Riders close its deficit to 7-3. An RBI single by Lynea Klemmedson and an RBI single by Ellis gave YC life.

Matta led the Rider from the dish going 2 for 3 with a run scored.

YC has qualified for the NJCAA Region I Division I Playoffs. The double elimination tournament will be played at Eastern Arizona College beginning on Friday against an opponent yet to be determined.
