Volleyball Signs Middle Blocker from Elite Colorado Club

Mestas 2On Monday morning, Head Coach Zach Shaver announced that the Roughrider Volleyball programmed strengthened their 2016 roster with another NLI signing. Joining the Yavapai squad next fall will be 5’11” middle blocker, Santana Mestas from Pueblo, CO. During her senior year, she played for both Pueblo West High School and Colorado Jrs. 18-Sherri teams.

A few of Santana’s achievements include South Central League Volleyball All-Conference Honorable Mention, South Central League Champions in 2014 & 2015, Regional Champions 2014, 2016 CHSAA All State Games participant, and lettering all 4 years in volleyball. Academically, Mestas also was a standout, including finishing 10th at Future Business Leaders of America competition, Outstanding Achievement in Spanish I & II, plus 3 years of perfect attendance.

Commenting on the signing of Mestas, Coach Shaver said, “Santana was exactly the type of player we were looking for as we searched for another quality attacker for our 2016 roster. The combination of court experience with Pueblo West HS plus elite level training with Colorado Jrs. has helped Santana become a well rounded middle blocker. We are excited that she can attack effectively in front of the setter, is proficient on the slide attack behind the setter, and her blocking is solid. Santana’s personality both on and off the court is what helped her rise above the other middle blockers on our list. While visiting with us, she displayed confidence, great communication skills, and a determination to be successful. I believe Santana has the skills to be a successful middle blocker in the ACCAC and should compete for playing time with our other 3 freshmen middle blockers.”

Mestas 3Santana Mestas joins Baylie Stephens (Oro Valley, AZ), Bailey Anderson (Prescott, AZ), and Maddie McKeown (Juneau, AK) as middle blockers in the Roughrider 2016 freshmen class. Holding down the libero position in the freshmen class will be Lauren Ulibarri (Flagstaff, AZ) and Hannah Semon (Oro Valley, AZ). Next year’s freshmen class will also include 2 setters Hayley Huntsman (Las Vegas, NV) and Juliette Tygret (Gilbert, AZ). There are 2 more Roughrider freshmen who will play on the pins, Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) and Kaitlyn Yost (Fullerton, CA).

On August 8th, the new Roughriders will move to Prescott and join the 5 returning players (Jordan Tilley from Ashland, OR, Marley Boase from Vista, CA, BreiAnna Grunig from Montpelier, ID, Kassidy Pomeroy from Tucson, AZ, and Iva Alebic from Obermaiselstein, Germany) in their quest to repeat as Region 1 & District C Champions.
