Roughriders Trample Thunderbirds

The #17 ranked Roughrider softball team swept an ACCAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon over Mesa Community College in Mesa, 7-4 and 5-3. Yavapai is now 33-9 in conference action and 41-11 overall.

In the first game, Karissa Pena knocked in three runs, helping YC to the 7-4 victory. She homered in the second inning.

Amy Robinson pitched lights out for the good guys. Mesa managed just four hits off of Robinson, who allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out two during her five innings of work.

The bottom of the first saw MCC take an early lead, 1-0. The lead stayed with Yavapail after the second, when it scored three runs on a three-run home run by Pena.

The Roughriders got two-run rallies in the third inning and the fourth. In the third, the Lady Riders scored on an RBI double by Andrea Sotelo, scoring Nicole Matta.

In the second game, Yavapai beat the Thunderbirds 5-3 behind Lindsey Smith, who went 1 for 2 and hit a home run. She homered in the fourth inning.
Amy Robinson shut down Mesa while she was in the circle. Robinson held the opponent hitless over 1 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two.

Dustie Durham recorded the win for the Roughriders. She allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings. Durham struck out three, walked two and gave up five hits.

The top of the third saw the Green and Gold take an early lead, 3-0. A single by Mayhina Chong, bringing home Jocilyn Ellis started the inning off. YC then tacked on more runs when Sotelo scored on an RBI single by Karissa Pena and Chong scored on an RBI double by Lynea Klemmedson.

MCC quickly matched the Roughriders’ strong inning with a three-run inning of its own in the third. The game was never in doubt after the fourth, as the Riders scored one run on a solo home run by Smith.

YC continues the mini-road trip with a doubleheader on Saturday at Glendale Community College. Last month in Prescott, YC split a doubleheader with the Gauchos winning the first game 5-1 and dropping the second game 4-3. Saturday’s games will start at 12:00 PM.
