Volleyball Solidifies Their Defense for 2016 with Recent NLI Signing

Semon 3Yavapai Volleyball has added another high level athlete to their 2016 incoming freshmen class with the signing of Hannah Semon. The announcement came from Head Coach Zach Shaver. Hannah will come to Yavapai College from Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley, AZ where she is a standout libero for both her high school and the 18-1 team for Club Cactus.

When commenting on why the Roughriders pursued Hannah, Shaver said “She is the complete package. Hannah has all the skills required to be a great libero, has several years of high level prep experience in high school and club, plus she is an outstanding student.” Semon has won numerous academic awards including 4.0 GPA Academic Award, Academic Letter Winner (2x), Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, Honorable Mention for Arizona All Academic Girls Basketball Team, and Spotlight on Youth Award.

In the sport of volleyball, Hannah is a highly decorated individual. During her time at Ironwood Ridge HS, she has earned the Volleyball Most Outstanding Playing Award, Best Defensive Player Award, All Section First Team, Most Outstanding Saphire Division Player at the Nike Tournament of Champions. Hannah also owns the Nighthawks single season dig record with 539 which shattered the previous record. As a team captain, she helped lead the Nighthawks to a Runner Up finish in the 2015 AZ State Championships as well as a Section Championship (2015 & 2016). Hannah’s Club Cactus team qualified for the USA Volleyball National Championships in 2015 and won the Cactus Classic Championship in 2016.

Semon 5“Within the first few minutes of watching Hannah on the court in the libero jersey, we knew she could be a difference maker on our team! Her technical training from Coach Lang has helped her develop into a libero who excels at both serve receive passing and defense. For the past 2 years, Brooke Donnelly has started all 58 matches as the Roughrider libero. Now we will have a pair of talented freshmen battling it out daily to see who earns the privilege of wearing “the other color jersey.” Hannah’s talent, work ethic, and competitiveness will make our team better day in and day out. Our coaching staff is excited that she chose to join our program to wear the green and gold!”

When asked about the upcoming 2016 season, Coach Shaver commented, “We are very pleased with the way our roster is coming together and the depth we will have at each position. We will be challenging our team early on with matches against high level teams at both the Coyote Classic in Las Vegas and the Star Invite in Twin Falls, ID hosted by College of Southern Idaho (2016 National Champions). Our 4th annual Roughrider Invitational will also bring high caliber opponents to Prescott. The tournament field includes Colorado Northwestern, New Mexico Military Institute, College of Southern Nevada, and Utah State University-Eastern.” In 2015, Yavapai Volleyball earned the program’s first ever Region 1 / District C Championship which punched their ticket to the NJCAA DI National Championship Tournament comprised of 16 teams.
