Softball Continues Their Winning Ways with a Sweep of Scottsdale

The #18 ranked Roughriders softball team swept an ACCAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Bill Vallely Field over the visiting Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College, 8-0 and 7-6 (9 innings). Yavapai has a 37-11 overall record and a 29-9 conference mark. Scottsdale falls to 14-36 on the year and 13-26 in league play.

In the opener, Amy Robinson got the win for the Roughriders. She tossed six innings of shutout ball striking out seven, walked one and gave up six hits.

YC hit three home runs in the win. Home runs for the Green and Gold came when Andrea Sotelo homered in the first inning, Jocilyn Ellis homered in the first inning, and Mayhina Chong homered in the fifth inning.

Chong racked up four RBIs on three hits. She homered in the fifth inning and singled in the third and sixth innings.

The Lady Roughriders never trailed after scoring two runs in the first on two solo blasts.

YC matched its one-run third inning with one more in the sixth. In the third, Yavapai scored on an RBI single by Chong, bringing home Andrea Sotelo.

YC got two-run rallies in the fourth inning and the fifth. In the fourth, Yavapai College Roughriders Softball scored on an RBI double by Mikayla Newham, plating Shayna Ige.

In the second game, Yavapai needed extra innings to get the victory. Sydney Forray’s walk-off single boosted YC to the 7-6 win.

Forray was solid at the plate going 2 for 4 and driving in one. She singled in the fourth and ninth innings.

Andrea Sotelo had three extra-base hits. She homered in the third inning, her second of the day, and doubled in the first and eighth innings.

Robinson got her second victory of the day. She pitched four shutout innings striking out five, walked four and gave up two hits.

Mayhina Chong and Andrea Sotelo, who teamed up for four hits and five RBIs, sparked YC.

The Riders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A double by Andrea Sotelo, plating Nicole Matta started the inning off. YC then tacked on more runs when Sotelo scored on an RBI single by Dustie Durham.

Single baserunners came all the way around to score in each of the fourth, eighth and ninth. In the fourth, YC scored on a solo home run by Chong.

Yavapai has a quick turnaround as they play host to Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Thursday, a make-up game last Friday. The twinbill will start at 12:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
