Baseball Sweeps Glendale in Two Close Games
The Roughrider baseball team swept an ACCAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Roughrider Park over Glendale Community College, 6-5 and 5-4. Yavapai is now 29-12 overall and 16-5 in conference play. Glendale falls to 16-25 overall and 9-17 in the league standings.
In the opener, Yavapai and Glendale passed the lead back and forth four times on Tuesday, but in the end YC pulled out the 6-5 win.
The Roughriders took the lead in the fifth inning and held on for the victory. A fielder’s choice scored Dylan Enwiller and gave the Green and Gold the lead for good.
It was a good day at the plate for Gavin Johns. Johns went 3-4 and drove in one. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the first and fourth innings.
Glendale’s lineup had no answer for Andrew Gross. Gross held Glendale hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two.
Glendale jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
After a quick strike from Glendale, Yavapai countered with four runs in the second. Yavapai College scored on a three-run double by Nick Guaragna and an RBI double by Johns.
It took 11 innings, but Yavapai managed to put away Glendale 5-4 in the nightcap.
With the score tied at four in the eleventh inning, Turtle Kuhaulua came to the plate and doubled, plating Nikko Delgado.
Brock Ephan racked up two RBIs on one hit for YC. He homered in the first inning.
Nicko Ortega got the win in relief pitching four innings and allowing one run.
In the bottom of the first, the Roughriders grabbed the early lead, 3-0. A two-run home run by Ephan, scoring Gavin Johns started the inning off. The scoreboard lit up again for Yavapai when Jaxxon Fagg scored on an RBI single by Delgado.
Glendale scored one run in the second inning, and then followed it up with one more in the eighth.
YC pushed across one run in both the fourth inning and the eleventh. In the fourth, Yavapai scored on an RBI single by Dylan Enwiller, plating Delgado.
Yavapai continues conference play on Saturday, April 9th at Mesa Community College. The doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM
