Yavapai Sweeps League Leading Arizona Western
The Roughrider softball team recorded a huge doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon against #11 and league leader, Arizona Western College at Bill Vallely Field, 5-0 and 3-2. Yavapai is now 33-11 on the year and 25-9 in ACCAC action. Arizona Western falls to 27-5 in conference play and 33-9 overall.
Amy Robinson was dominant in the circle for the Roughriders to record the shutout victory. The Oregon native scattered five hits and struck out 10 opponent batters.
Jocilyn Ellis was 2 for 3, 1 run scored, and 2 runs batted in. Mahina Chong was also 2 for 3. Andrea Sotelo was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.
In the second game, YC used late game heroics to finish the conference sweep. Down 2-1 in the seventh inning, Chong led the inning off with a walk followed by a single from Dustie Durham. Lynae Klemmedson walked to load the bases brining Karissa Pena to the plate. Pena hit a sacrifice fly plating Chong and advancing Durham to the third. Nicole Matta was inserted as a pinch hitter and quickly delivered the the game winning hit knocking in Durham.
Sydney Forray was 1 for 3 with knocking her 14th home run.
Robinson got the victory relieving starter Durham.
Yavapai continues ACCAC play on Tuesday at Gateway Community College. Yavapai beat the Geckos in February, 9-0 and 24-0. Tuesday’s doubleheader begins at 1:00 PM.
