Roughriders Sweep Gila Monsters

2016 Baseball (3.1)The Roughrider baseball team swept their first ACCAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Roughrider Park over Eastern Arizona College, 5-3 and 13-0. YC is now 5-2 in the conference and 13-8 overall. Eastern Arizona falls to 2-4 in league play and 12-10 on the year.

In the opening game, Eastern Arizona was never able to get over the hump and get over its troubles against YC after falling behind by three runs in the fourth inning.

Yavapai was led by Jaxxon Fagg’s hitting. Fagg went 2 for 3, drove in one and scored one run. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the fourth inning.

Andrew Gross threw four innings scattering four hits and striking out four to gain the victory. Nicko Ortega worked out of 10 difficult moments for the Roughriders to get the save. He pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed no earned runs on no hits. Ortega faced his toughest situation in the sixth inning.

In the second game, Brock Ephan had a career day and Chase Beal threw the complete game shutout.

The scoring began early for YC with Nate Easley knocking a leadoff home run. Five batters later, Ephan blistered a home run over the right field fence, his first of three homers on the afternoon.

In the third inning, Ephan hit a monster shot to left field extending the lead to 7-0. The next inning, being an equal opportunity hitter, Ephan hit a towering homer to centerfield. He finished his day with a run-scoring double in the 5th inning.

Beal was dominant on the bump for the Riders striking out 9 Eastern Arizona batters and allowing only 4 hits.

Easley and Dylan Enwiller each had 3 hits for the Green and Gold.

Yavapai takes a break from conference play as they host Arizona Christian University on Wednesday, March 2nd. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
