Roughriders Dominate in Tucson
The Roughrider softball team swept a Saturday afternoon doubleheader in Tucson over Pima community college, 5-1 and 3-2. The roughriders improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACCAC. The Aztecs fall to 5-5 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.
In the opener, Jocilyn Ellis collected three hits as YC took home their 2016 conference opener. She singled in the first, third, and fifth innings.
Amy Robinson kept contact to a minimum, striking out eight pima batters. Robinson allowed no earned runs, six hits and two walks over seven innings.
The top of the third saw the roughriders take an early lead, 1-0. The green and gold’s threat began with a single by Shayna Ige. A stolen base then moved ige from first to second. Ellis singled, scoring Ige.
Pima managed to score one run in the third inning on an RBIi double.
The game was never in doubt after the fifth, as Yavapai scored two runs on a sacrifice fly by Dustie Durham and an RBI single by Andrea Sotelo.
In the nightcap, YC beat the Aztecs 3-2 behind both the bat and the arm of Durham.
The Buckeye native boosted her batting average thanks to a perfect 3 for 3 day at the plate to pace the riders. She singled in the second and fourth innings and doubled in the sixth inning.
Durham was a workhorse in the circle for Yavapai. She allowed two earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings of work.
Yavapai pulled out the win thanks to a strong seventh inning. The Riders Scored on a two-run double by Jocilyn Ellis, bringing home Nicole Matta and Mikayla Newham.
Robinson got the win for Yavapai college roughriders softball. She tossed one inning of shutout ball. Robinson struck out none, walked none and gave up two hits.
