November 18 – Today in Roughrider History
On this date in 1990, and in only their 39th match in the program’s history, Yavapai College defeated Passaic County (NJ) 2-1 in the second sudden death overtime period to capture their first of seven national championships. Kobah Washington (second half tying goal) and Kurt Funkhouser (game winner) scored for the Roughriders. Edson Rico assisted on both goals in a game that put Yavapai soccer on the national map. On this date in 2007, Yavapai won their sixth national soccer title. Trailing 3-2, Justin Meram scored the tying goal with just two minutes in regulation. The Roughriders would not be denied winning in a shootout against Georgia Perimeter. Evan McNeil (6th kicker) and Dirk Petersen (7th kicker) both scored in the shootout prior Sam Hayden’s save in a seventh round of penalty kicks.
