Volleyball Wins First Ever District Championship
On Friday night in a packed Walraven Gym the Roughriders swept Seminole State (OK) 3-0 to win the Region 1 / District C Championship. Yavapai completed the victory by scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-12. The win marks the first District Championship and birth to the NJCAA DI National Championship in program history. Yavapai will take their 22-6 record to Casper, WY for the National Championship Tournament which is November 19-21.
Yavapai’s offense was stellar as the team hit .246 for the match with a high of .306 in the 3rd set but their defense is what proved to be the deciding factor. The Roughriders collected 63 digs (21 per set) and 18 total blocks (6 per set) Sophomore libero Brooke Donnelly was incredible with 25 digs, 3 assists, and 1 service ace. Sophomore middle blocker Shelby Mottram led the Roughriders in blocks with 6 plus she chipped in 5 kills while hitting .375. Second on the team in blocks was sophomore right side hitter Kayle Park with 5. Kayle was even more amazing offensively 8 kills, only 1 error, on 11 attempts leading to a team high .636 hitting percentage.
Freshman outside hitter Iva Alebic led all players with 13 kills. Alebic’s 12 digs were good for second best on the team. The double / double earned Iva the Region 1 Tournament Most valuable Player award. Fellow outside hitter Kelsey Park also had a strong outing with 9 kills, only 2 errors, on 25 attempts for a strong hitting percentage of .280.
