Roughriders Comeback in Marathon 5 Set Victory
Yavapai decided to take the long road to victory on Saturday afternoon against Arizona Western. The Matadors won the first 2 sets by scores of 17-25 and 20-25. After the intermission Yavapai found themselves only 3 points away from being swept in the 3rd set with score tied at 22-22. The Roughriders decided to fight their way of the whole they had dug for themselves with a 3-0 point run to win the 3rd set 25-22. The Roughriders continued to improve offensively and wear down the Matadors as they won the remaining 2 sets 25-21 and 15-8.
Yavapai totaled 17 blocks for the match which was the deciding factor in the total points scored between the two teams. Yavapai earned 77 points to Arizona Western’s 73 points. Freshman middle blocker Sienna Sawyer led the Roughriders with 11 block assist in only 3 sets of action. Sawyer also chipped in 5 kills hitting a superb .556.
Offensively it was the Iva Alebic show. She banged out 29 kills while hitting .290 on 69 attempts. Alebic also contributed 4 block assists and 12 digs. Second in kills for the Roughriders was sophomore Paige Hamilton with 12.
With the victory Yavapai improved to 19-6 overall and 12-2 in conference play. That ACCAC record secures the Roughriders a first round by in District C playoffs and home court advantage in the District C Championship which will take place at 7:00 pm on Friday November 6th.
