2015 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions

On Saturday, the Yavapai College athletic department inducted the 2015 Hall of Fame class in a luncheon held in the community room on the Yavapai College campus.

The inductees included women’s cross-country athlete Mirsada Buric (1993-95) and contributor Tom “Mr. Roughrider” Gammill.

Both selectees addressed the intimate crowd in emotional and inspirational speeches.

Mr. Gammill started his association with Yavapai College in 1992 when he accepted a position as the announcer for the women’s basketball games. The announcing gig continued as he saw duty behind the microphone for all of the sporting events even acting as a starter for the men’s and women’s cross country teams.

Over time, Tom transformed into the mascot for the Roughrider sports teams donning the Roughrider-style hat and the authentic style of dress of Teddy Roosevelt’s Roughriders. Tom even maintains the distinctive handlebar moustache.

Friends and family joined Tom at the induction ceremony.

Ms. Buric related an inspirational story of her journey to Yavapai College. Arriving from her native, war torn country of Bosnia where she trained and competed for her country in the Olympic Games.

While competing in the Whiskey Row Marathon, then Yavapai cross-country coach, Julie Williams struck up a friendship with Mirsada and offered her a scholarship to run for the lady harriers.

In her two years at YC, Buric was a 2-time All-ACCAC performer; a 2-time All-NJCAA Region I runner; and a 2-time NJCAA All-American. She led her team to a third place finish in 1993 where she finished in fourth place in the national meet. In 1994, Mirsada willed her team to a National Championship. She finished the National Meet in first place in record time.

Mirsada’s children and sister were in attendance and a heart felt letter was read from her former coach, Julie Williams Jones.

This is the fourth class of the Yavapai College Athletic Hall of Fame.
