Yavapai Volleyball Releases Their 2015 Schedule
The 2015 Yavapai College Volleyball schedule will consists of 28 matches with 13 of those being played at home in the newly renovated Walraven Gym. The season will kick off with 2 scrimmages; the ACCAC Jamboree on Saturday August 15th and with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Tuesday August 18th (6:00 pm at ERAU).
The Roughriders will play their first 4 matches on the road in Roswell, NM at The New Mexico Military Institute Invitational on August 21 (schedule TBA). While in Roswell Yavapai will play 4 opponents (New Mexico Military Institute, Hutchinson CC, Garden City CC, and Odessa CC) all of whom competed in their respective District playoffs in 2014. Eventually NMMI and Hutchinson CC qualified for the NJCAA DI National Championship Tournament.
Next on the schedule, South Mountain CC will then travel to Prescott for the first ACCAC match of the season on Wednesday August 26th (7:00 pm). To wrap up the month of August Yavapai will travel to Las Vegas, NV to play 3 matches at College of Southern Nevada. On Friday August 28th (5:00 pm) the Roughriders will take on the Coyotes of CSN in their program’s inaugural volleyball match.
As the calendar turns to September the Roughriders will start the month with a 5 match home stand including the 2nd annual Roughrider Invitational presented by Marriott Hotels. The 2015 Roughrider Invitational will feature teams from Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
After the Roughrider Invitational the remainder of the season will be comprised of ACCAC competition with the notable exception of 1 match against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The match hosted by Yavapai College on Friday September 25th (7:00 pm) will be the 3rd consecutive “Crosstown Battle Against Breast Cancer” match between the 2 programs. Each year the teams combine their efforts through T shirt sales and sponsorships to donate all of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott Valley. This year’s match will include give-aways and survivor stories during the intermission between games 2 and 3.
Yavapai will look to take advantage of their final 4 matches against DI opponents in the friendly confines of Walraven Gym to finish the regular season strong and hopefully propel them into the Distict 1 playoffs.
The Roughriders will return 10 sophomores from last year’s squad while integrating 5 new freshmen from Arizona, Hawaii, Oregon, Idaho, and Germany to complete the team which looks to return to post season competition for the first time since 2011.
