Roughriders Are Going to the World Series
WESTERN DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!!!!!
The Roughrider baseball team is the 2015 NJCAA Division I Western District Champions after their 9-6 victory over the tournament host team College of Southern Nevada. With the victory, Yavapai advances to the NJCAA Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado beginning May 23rd. It will be Yavapai’s 8th trip to the tournament and the first since 2006. YC won the title in 1975, 1977 and 1993.
The Roughriders and College of Southern Nevada volleyed the lead four times on Saturday, but YC came out on top for a 9-6 win on Saturday at Henderson, Nevada.
Yavapai took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After Brody Clifford homered, plating Alexis Cruz. Southern Nevada was equal to the task in their next at bats as they put two runs on the board.
The Coyotes took their first lead in the game in their half of the fifth inning pushing three runs across. However, the Green and Gold grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on grand slam by Austin Paschke plating Brock Hartley, Marco Jaime and Luke Doyle.
Austin Paschke racked up four RBIs on two hits for the Roughriders.
The Coyotes put a single run up in the 6th inning, but YC countered with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Alexis Cruz led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Clifford lined out to center field and Jamie singled. Willie Calhoun doubled to right plating Cruz and moving Jamie to third. Luke Doyle followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Jamie for the final runs of the game.
Michael Laudick shut down Southern Nevada while he was on the rubber. Laudick held the host team hitless over 2 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one.
Degan Harte recorded the win for YC even though he allowed six runs over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three, walked one and surrendered 12 hits.
Nicko Ortega got the final three outs in the ninth inning for his second save of the tournament.
Jamie was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Clifford was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored and Paschke was 2 for 4 with 4 runs batted in and one run scored.
