Roughriders Advance to District Championship

The “COMEBACK KIDS” strike again…The Yavapai College baseball team used some late game heroics to beat the #7 ranked Coyotes from College of Southern Nevada Friday afternoon, 5-2, to earn a spot in the NJCAA Western District Championship Game scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The Roughriders overall record is now 44-16 and is currently ranked #15 in the NJCAA DI polls.

KoltermanJake Kolterman was a warrior from the mound in getting the win for the Roughriders. He allowed two runs over eight innings. He struck out seven, walked two and surrendered seven hits.

In the bottom of the third, the College of Southern Nevada grabbed the early lead, 2-0. Meanwhile the Roughrider offense struggled to get base runners. The Green and Gold were held hitless through seven innings until Alexis Cruz doubled in the eighth inning. Two batters later, Marco Jaime chased Cruz home with a single to right to cut the lead in half.

PaschkeIn the decisive ninth with one out, Alexis Olmeda singled to center. Two batters later with two outs, Austin Paschke drilled a double to plate Olmeda to tie the score. Andrew Hermanson reached on an error pushing Paschke to third. Cruz then drew a walk loading the bases. Brody Clifford was hit by a pitch scoring Paschke and Jaime singled to left driving in Hermanson and Cruz makng the score 5-2.

Nicko Ortega came on in the ninth inning with nobody out and two runners on. The first batter Ortega faced grounded into a double play and the final batter looked at a called third to conclude the game.

Jaime was 2 for 4 with three runs batted in. Olmeda, Paschke and Cruz each had a hit.

Yavapai now faces the winner of the Southern Nevada/Trinidad State elimination game. Saturday’s title game will begin at 12:00 PM. The game can be viewed live online at http://www.njcaatv.com/csncoyotes/
