Roughriders Are Region Champions
YC WINS THE REGION AND ADVANCES TO THE WEST DISTRICT FINALS
The Roughrider baseball team scored an improbable eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to sweep Cochise College in the NJCAA Region I Championship Series and advance to the NJCAA West District Finals. Yavapai won today’s game 12-11 and the series, 2-0. Yavapai advances their overall record to 42-16.
Trailing since the first inning, YC used 5 hits, 5 walks and a hit batsman to take the lead and what proved to be the game. Prior to the ninth inning, Yavapai only managed 4 runs on 7 hits.
The top of the first saw the Roughriders take an early lead, 2-0. Willie Calhoun kicked things off for YC with a double. A groundout by Alexis Olmeda then moved Calhoun from second to third. Brock Hartley singled, bringing home Calhoun. Yavapai added more runs when Doyle scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Paschke.
Cochise put up four runs in the second inning, 2 runs in the third and fourth, 1 run in the fifth and 2 more runs in the seventh.
After the first inning, YC scored single runs in the fifth and the seventh before the 8-run outburst in the ninth.
In the decisive ninth, Yavapai led the inning off with 3 base on balls for Brody Clifford, John King and Calhoun. Luke Doyle followed with a single chasing home Clifford. Olmeda followed that up with another single plating King. Hartley took a walk and Austin Paschke singled driving in Doyle. Andrew Hermanson followed that up with another single chasing Olmeda and Hartley home.
After a Cochise double play, Clifford returned to the plate for the second time in the inning with a runner on third. Clifford was plunked and King was issued another walk. With the bases loaded, Calhoun delivered the game winning single scoring Paschke and Clifford for the winning run.
Calhoun, Hermanson, Doyle and Hartley combined for 10 hits and seven RBIs. Calhoun launched his 31st home run of the year.
Yavapai advances to the NJCAA West District Finals at a Region 18 site yet to be determined. The games will begin on Thursday, May 14th.
