Roughrider Big Bats Come Alive Late

Big blasts bring people to their feet, and the Roughriders certainly provided a bunch of entertainment on Thursday afternoon. Four home runs powered YC to a 7-3 victory over Arizona Western College in the first round of the NJCAA Region I Division I Playoffs. Yavapai takes a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.

For six innings, the Roughrider offense managed only two hits. However, in the seventh inning, the floodgates opened and the hits came in bundles.

DSC_0081Down 3-0, Luke Doyle led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk. Alexis Olmeda followed with a single to centerfield and Brock Hartley singled to rightfield bringing to the plate Austin Paschke. The sophomore first baseman hit a high fly ball to right centerfield just clearing the fence for a grand slam and the lead for the first time in the game.

In the eighth, AWC went down in order. Willie Calhoun led off the inning and promptly delivered his 28th home run of the year, followed by a another home run by Doyle followed by another home run by Olmeda, back-to-back-to-back, giving the Riders a 7-3 lead that held through the ninth inning.

Reza Aleaziz was stellar on the mound getting the win for the Roughriders. He allowed three runs over nine innings. He struck out four, walked five and surrendered five hits.

Doyle was 3 for 3 from the plate. Olmeda and Brock Hartley were 2 for 4.

The playoff series continues on Friday with the chance for the Roughriders to advance to the next round with a victory. The single nine-inning game will begin at 2:00 PM at Roughrider Park.
