Roughriders Collect 2 More Signatures on Volleyball NLI’s

Sienna 1The Yavapai Volleyball coaching staff is pleased to announce two additional freshmen who have chosen to become Roughriders in 2015. Recently Sienna Sawyer and Jaynalee Hoopai both signed the National Letter of Intent expressing their desire to join the Yavapai squad.

Sienna Sawyer is a 6′ tall middle blocker from Gilbert, AZ. Sawyer played both indoor and sand volleyball for Highlands High School and coach Brian Hiapo. She was a captain for both teams at Highland HS, a starting middle blocker for the team that plays on the hardwood, and a member on the #1 ranked doubles pairing for the Hawks. The Highland Hawks sand volleyball team finished 2nd in the state of Arizona this spring. Sienna is also a member of the Molten Volleyball Club 18’s team playing for Coach Vee Hiapo.

“I believe Sienna’s consistent attacking of 1st tempo sets along with her aggressiveness on the court will allow her to compete with our 3 returning sophomore middle blockers. Sienna is quick and has terrific hand contact on the ball which will serve well in our offensive scheme.” said Head Coach Zach Shaver. “Her strength in attacking quickly behind the setter is something we were looking for in our 2015 freshmen class.”

Jaynalee 2 Jaynalee Hoopai is a 5’4″ libero / outside hitter from Hana, HI. Jaynalee plays for Hana High School and Hawaiian Style Volleyball Club (coached by Al Paschoal). Although Hoopai starts as an outside hitter for Hana HS she will compete at Yavapai for time as a libero.

“We had already recruited setting and attacking in our 2015 freshmen class but we were missing a strong ball control player. Jaynalee was exactly who we were looking for to full fill that need. Her outstanding passing technique and ability to dig almost any attack caught our attention immediately. Jaynalee possesses a natural feel for the ball when it is contacting her platform that is not found as often in today’s younger volleyball athletes.” said Shaver. “It will be fun to watch her compete against her older sister who is a libero for Eastern Arizona College.”

These 2 new freshmen bring the count to 5 for 2015, and a total number of Roughriders to 15 who are expected to open fall camp on August 8th. “Coach Ruiz and I are excited about the way this freshmen class is coming together and we look forward to integrating them with our strong group of 10 returning sophomores.” stated Coach Shaver
