Volleyball Inks Two More Signees for 2015
The Roughrider Volleyball Team announced the signing of two more National Letters of Intent today for their 2015 freshmen class. Head Coach Zach Shaver added two more attackers to next year’s roster. According to Shaver both are high quality players who will challenge to get into the starting line up at both the outside and right side hitter positions.
BreiAnna Grunig is a 6′ attacker from Montpelier, ID who was a standout for Bear Lake High School and lettered in three sports. BreiAnna was chosen as the volleyball team’s MVP both her junior and senior seasons. She also earned MVP honors in basketball as a sophomore and junior. Academically she is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to major in Nursing. BreiAnna has also played for outstanding Pocatello Elite Volleyball Club for the past 3 years. Her teams have qualified for the elite USA Junior National Championships all 3 years. Outside of volleyball, BreiAnna is a member of the volunteer program at her local hospital and is a 4 year seminary graduate.
When asked to comment about BreiAnna Grunig, Coach Shaver said, “She is among a shrinking group of players in our sport who can truly play multiple positions effectively. Currently, she plays as a middle blocker for Pocatello Elite because her team needed someone in that position, but she is even stronger as an outside or right side hitter. BreiAnna is a confident and aggressive player who will make our team stronger on and off the court.”
Also signing a NLI this week was Iva Alebic, who is a 6’1″ attacker from Obermaiselstein, Germany. Iva is a dominating attacker and solid all around player for TSV Sonthofen while she attends Gertrud-von-le-Fort Gym Oberstdorf. Iva has led her team to the German Championships every year since she was 13 years old. In 2014 alone, Iva and her team won the Swabian (U18), Southern-Bavarian (U18), and Swabian (U20) Championships which qualified them again for the German Championships. Iva is fluent in 3 languages; German, English, and Croatian.
“Iva is the first international recruit that I have signed as a head coach, so the process took a little longer than usual, but we determined quickly that Iva was a natural fit for our program. She has all of the qualities of a dominating attacker as well as the ball control skills of a libero. Her knowledge and experience gained through years of international competition will be invaluable to our team.” commented Shaver.
BreiAnna Grunig and Iva Alebic will join early signer Jordan Tilley (setter) as members of the 2015 Roughrider freshmen class. When asked about any additional members of the 2015 class, Coach Shaver said, “We currently have 3 more offers extended at this time and we are hopeful that each of those excellent athletes will choose to become Roughriders as well.” In addition to the 2015 freshmen class Shaver expects 10 sophomores to return from the 2014 squad which narrowly missed out on the NJCAA Region 1 playoffs. When Shaver was asked about expectations for 2015 he said, “In Yavapai Athletics, the expectations are always high and that is one reason why I chose to coach here. I feel if our players and coaches continue to work hard and stay focused, our goals will be within reach at the end of the season.”
