Baseball Returns Home Empty Handed

The Roughrider baseball team dropped a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix to Paradise Valley Community College, 10-7 and 7-4. YC falls to 32-12 overall and 16-10 in the ACCAC standings. Paradise Valley improves to 29-12 on the season and 21-9 in conference play.

In the opener, Willie Calhoun clubbed two of his three home runs, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Roughriders to the victory.

In the top of the first, the Green and Gold grabbed the early lead, 3-0. A three-run home run by Calhoun plated Alexis Cruz and Luke Doyle.

YC got one-run rallies in the fourth inning and the sixth. In the fourth, the Riders scored on a sacrifice fly by Brody Clifford, scoring Andrew Hermanson.

One run crossed the plate in the top half of the sixth, making the score 10-5. An RBI single by Clifford gave the Riders life.

YC scored two runs in the top of the seventh to cut its deficit to three on two-run home run by Calhoun.

Degan Harte was charged with the loss. He allowed eight runs in four innings,
walked two and struck out one.

Calhoun was 3 for 3 with 2 home runs, 5 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Alexis Cruz was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Clifford was 1 for 2 with 2 runs batted in.

DSC_0081In the second game, Calhoun stayed hot reaching base three times. He scored one run and had one RBI. He homered in the fifth inning and singled in the seventh inning.

Nicko Ortega was charged with the loss. He lasted just two innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed three runs.

Yavapai College Roughriders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Luke Doyle started the rally for the Roughriders with a single. A single by Alexis Cruz then moved Doyle from first to third. Alexis Olmeda singled, bringing home Doyle. However, The game was never in doubt after the seventh, as Paradise Valley scored six runs.

Calhoun was 2 for 4 with a home run and 1 RBI. Olmeda was 2 for 5 with a double and 1 run batted in.

YC continues conference play on Saturday, April 11th when they play host to South Mountain Community College. Earlier in the season, the Cougars swept a doubleheader from the Roughriders, 3-1 and 7-4. Saturday’s game will begin at 12:00 PM.
