Baseball Earns 30th Win with Sweep of Gateway
The Roughrider baseball team extended their current winning streak to nine games after a Saturday afternoon doubleheader sweep over the visiting Geckos from Gateway Community College, 6-3 and 12-6. Yavapai is now 30-8 overall and 14-6 in the ACCAC. Gateway falls to 10-14 in conference play and 20-19 on the year.
In the opener, the lead changed hands five different times with the Roughriders taking the lead in the fifth inning and holding off the Geckos for the victory. YC scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Luke Doyle plating Marco Jaime.
Jake Kolterman recorded the win for the Green and Gold. He allowed three runs over seven innings. Kolterman striking out two, walking two and scattering six hits.
YC was led by Jaime’s hitting. Jaime went 2-3, drove in one and scored two runs. He singled in the third inning and tripled in the fifth inning.
In the nightcap, Yavapai used a six-run seventh inning to seal a 12-6 win.
The Riders scored in the seventh on a solo home run by Marco Jaime, an RBI double by Alexis Cruz, an RBI single by Alexis Olmeda, and a three-run home run by Austin Paschke.
Yavapai hit three home runs in the win. Additional home runs for Yavapai College Roughriders came when Olmeda homered in the sixth inning.
Degan Harte recorded the win for the home team. He tossed one inning of shutout ball striking out none, walking none and giving up no hits.
Offensively, Jaime and Paschke, teamed up for six hits and nine RBIs, sparked YC.
YC returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 31st at fellow ACCAC member, Glendale Community College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
