Roughriders Choke Scottsdale

DSC_0069The #7 ranked Roughrider baseball team swept an ACCAC doubleheader from the visiting Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College Saturday afternoon at Roughrider Park, 6-2 and 7-3. Yavapai improves their conference record 10-6 and their overall record to 26-8. Scottsdale falls to 9-11 in league action and 19-14 on the year.

In the first game, Austin Paschke drove in three runs, helping the Roughriders to the 6-2 victory. He singled in the second inning and homered in the third inning.

YC relied on Jake Kolterman to eat up innings en route to the win. Kolterman allowed one earned run, five hits and no walks while striking out four over 6 2/3 innings of work.

Scottsdale jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. However, Yavapai went up for good in the third inning, scoring four runs on an error and a three-run home run by Paschke.

Paschke, Willie Calhoun, Andrew Hermanson and Brock Hartley each had two hits.

In the second game, Michael Laudick put together a nice outing. Scottsdale managed just one hit off of the left-hander, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out five during his 3 2/3 innings of work.

Jesus Garcia got the victory. He allowed three runs over five innings, struck out five, walked two and gave up six hits.

YC never trailed after scoring one run in the first on an RBI double by Alexis Cruz.

The Green and Gold built upon its lead with two runs in the second. A hit into a fielder’s choice scored Brock Hartley to get the Riders on the board in the inning. That was followed up by Calhoun’s single, bringing home Luke Doyle.

Two runs in the top of the fourth helped Scottsdale close its deficit to 4-2. But YC responded as it scored three runs of its own in the sixth scoring on an RBI double by Calhoun and a two-run single by Alexis Olmeda.

YC continues conference play on Tuesday, March 24th at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM
