Yavapai Baseball Offense Continues Dominance
Willie Calhoun hit three home runs on the day and the Roughriders hit six total en route to a doubleheader sweep of Langley Blaze, British Columbia, Canada, 12-0 and 9-6. YC improves their overall record to 24-8.
In the opener, ten runs in the first three innings helped YC blow out the Blaze. A two-run home run by Calhoun, a two-run double by Brock Hartley, and a two-run single by Cooper Goldby in the first inning and a groundout by Austin Paschke during the second inning supplied the early offense for the Roughriders.
YC hit four home runs in the win. Additional home runs came when Alexis Cruz homered in the third inning, Calhoun homered in the first and third innings, and Brody Clifford homered in the third inning.
Chandler Eden got it done on the bump on the way to the victory. He pitched five shutout innings striking out six, walking one and surrendering one hit.
Both teams passed the lead back and forth seven times in the nightcap, but in the end the Green and Gold pulled out a 9-6 win in seven innings.
In the top of the first, the Blaze grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Yavapai knotted the score in their half of the first, but the opponent put four runs on the board in the second inning.
Yavapai cut into the lead in the fourth. Brock Hartley began the inning with a double followed by a bunt single by Clifford and Ryan Oberg cleared the bases with a double. Oberg moved to third on a sacrifice by Tyann Holmstrom and Luke Doyle chased Oberg home on a sacrifice fly.
Yavapai tied the game in the fifth inning on Calhoun’s third home run of the day and in the sixth, YC put three runs on the board highlighted by a monster home run by Austin Paschke that hit the road behind the right field fence.
Caleb Duhay came on in relief to get the victory. He threw three innings giving up one run and striking out six. Austin Brown put away the final three outs to record the save.
Yavapai resumes conference on Saturday, March 21st when they host Scottsdale Community College (19-12, 9-9). The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
