Roughriders and Cougars Split in Softball Matchup

The Roughrider softball team split a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against South Mountain Community College. YC outlasted the Cougars in the first game, 5-3 and lost the nightcap 4-1. The Roughriders are now 20-14 on the year and 14-10 in conference play. South Mountain is 16-15 on the year and 13-13 in the ACCAC

YC did the bulk of their scoring in the second inning highlighted by a two-run single by Jocilynn Ellis. In the fifth inning, Sydney Forray hit a solo home run to add to the lead.

South Mountain scored three runs in the seventh on two singles. Still, the Cougars couldn’t draw even.

Forray went a perfect 2-2 at the plate. Ellis was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and Nicole Matta was 2 for 4 with a run batted in.

Samantha Blair got the win for Rider Nine. She allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings striking out six, walking two and surrendering seven hits.

Saria Camacho pitched the final out to record the save.

In the second game, South Mountain did all of their scoring in the first three innings of the game posting a single run in the first and second frames and they pushed 2 runs across in the third.

YC could only manage seven hits against the opponent pitching. The lone run of the game for the Riders crossed the plate in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Jaymee Jackson.

Forray went 1 for 1. Ellis and Jessica Mesa were 2 for 4.

YC takes to the road on Tuesday, March 17th at ACCAC leader Phoenix College. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM.
