Baseball Continues to Dominate

DSC_0092The Roughriders swept a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Roughrider Park to extend their current win streak to five games. Today’s victims were the Coyotes from Western Nebraska Community College. YC blanked the opponent in the first game 10-0 and won the nightcap 7-4. Yavapai is now 20-7 on the year.

IN the opener, the game was decided quickly as YC scored five runs in the first three innings. A two-run double by Willie Calhoun, a two-run double by Alexis Cruz, and an RBI single by Alexis Olmeda during the second inning supplied the early offense for the Roughriders.

Cruz racked up three RBIs on two hits for the offense; Olmeda, Tynan Holmstrom and Marco Jaime each had two hits. .

The Coyotes had no answer for starting pitcher Jake Kolterman. He gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out eight during his five innings of work.

In the second game, the Roughriders scored two runs on two singles in the first inning to pick up where they left off in from the first game. However, the opponent scored two runs in the top of the third helping them close its deficit to 3-2.

The Roughrider Nine scored two runs in the fourth inning, and then followed it up with two more in the eighth. In the fourth, YC scored on a solo home run by Luke Doyle.

Willie Calhoun finished the scoring with a two-run home run in the eighth.

Will Jones got the victory throwing three innings of two-hit ball. Nicko Ortega threw the final inning for the save.

Yavapai returns to ACCAC play on Tuesday, march 17th at Phoenix College. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
