Roughrider Baseball Improves Record to 17-7

The Roughrider baseball team split a pair of single nine-inning non-conference games against fellow ACCAC foes Gateway Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College. YC lost the first game of the day 8-0 and came from behind in the second to win, 12-6. Yavapai is now 17-7 overall.

In the opening game of the day, the opponent did all of the scoring in the second inning and the YC offense could only muster five hits on the day and only had three runners reach second.

In the nightcap, YC used a seven-run explosion in the ninth inning lead the Roughriders to the come from behind victory.

Yavapai scored in the ninth on an error, a three-run double by Alexis Olmeda, a groundout by Brock Hartley, and a two-run home run by Brody Clifford. However, prior to that, the teams traded runs for most of the contest. There were seven lead changes in the game.

Willie Calhoun racked up two RBIs on one hit for Riders . He homered in the fifth inning. Brock Hartly was 2 for 5 with 3 runs knocked in. Olmeda was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs.

Nicko Ortega recorded the win. He tossed two innings of shutout ball striking out two, walking none and gave up one hit.

The Roughriders return to Roughrider Park on Thursday, March 12 for a single nine-inning non-conference game against Northeastern Junior College, CO. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM

Thursday is FREE BASEBALL DAY AT THE BALLPARK. There will be no admission fee for the Thursday affair.
