Roughrider Baseball Splits with Aztecs
The #11 ranked Roughrider baseball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Roughrider Park with the visiting Aztecs from Pima Community College, 4-2 and 9-13. YC is now 7-5 in the ACCAC standings and 16-6 on the year. Pima is 10-8 in league play and 12-10 overall.
In the opener, the Roughriders and Pima exchanged the lead five times before
YC finally managed to grab the lead for good after a strong fifth inning.
The bottom of the first saw Yavapai take an early lead, 1-0. Willie Calhoun got things going for home team with a single followed by a single by Andrew Hermanson that moved Calhoun from first to second. After Calhoun stole third, Alexis Olmeda chased him home on a fielder’s choice.
Pima tied things up in the third and took the lead in the fourth. The Roughrider nine went up for good in their half of the fifth on an RBI single by Brock Hartley plating Olmeda.
Jake Kolterman pitched seven solid innings and allowed two earned runs, five hits and one walk while striking out two to get the complete game victory.
In the second game, offense was on display as both teams combined for 26 hits.
Luke Doyle led the way for the Riders going 2 for 4 with four runs batted on a single and a double. Brock Hartley racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Roughriders singling in the fourth inning and homering in the sixth inning.
Pima jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after three innings. YC got on the board in the fourth but the Aztecs posted two more runs in the fifth and Yavapai responded with one in their half of the inning.. The Roughriders scored two more in the sixth and cut the deficit to two with a five-run 8th inning, but Pima scored two in the ninth and squelched a possible Yavapai comeback in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.
YC takes a break from conference action on Tuesday although their opponents will be fellow conference foes, Gateway Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The Roughriders return to Roughrider Park on Thursday in single nine-inning game against Northeastern Junior College, CO. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM. On Friday, Yavapai entertains Douglas College, Canada in a single, nine-inning game beginning at 3:00 PM and on Saturday, YC hosts Western Nebraska Community College in a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
