Roughrider Baseball Splits With Matadors
The Roughriders baseball team split a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon with Arizona Western College in Yuma. YC won the first game 5-1 and dropped the nightcap 4-2. The Roughriders run their record to 14-5 overall and 5-4 in the ACCAC. Arizona Western is now 13-9 on the year and 6-4 in league play.
In the opener, Yavapai broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run sixth inning and Jake Koltermann went the distance for his 2nd victory of the year.
In their half of the sixth inning, the Roughriders loaded the bases on a single by Willie Calhoun, a walk by Luke Doyle and a single by Andrew Hermanson. Alexis Olmeda hit a sacrifice fly to break the tie and Alexis Cruz hit a three-run home run to finish the scoring for the game.
Calhoun was 2 for 4 on the day with a single and a home run and Hermanson went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
In the second game, the Matador scored in each of the first three innings to stake a 4-0 lead. Yavapi put two runs on the board in their half of the sixth. However, that was the only scoring that the Roughrider could muster in the nine-inning game.
Calhoun and Austin Paschke led the Rider offense with two hits apiece. Calhoun also had two runs batted in.
Chandler Eden got the start and the loss throwing 1.1 innings giving up 3 earned runs with 0 strikeouts.
On Wednesday, March 4th, the Roughirders travel to Thatcher to finish up the second game of last week’s doubleheader that was postponed due to rain. The nine-inning single game affair will start at 2:00 PM.
