Roughriders Fall to Matadors in Baseball ACCAC Opener
In their ACCAC opener, the Roughrider baseball team was swept Saturday afternoon in Phoenix at the hands of South Mountain Community College, 3-1 and 7-4. YC is now 7-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. South Mountain improves to 9-5 on the year and 2-0 in league action.
In the first game, the opponent pitching only allowed the Roughrider offense five hits in the seven inning game. Yavapai’s only threat came in the first inning in which the Riders scored their lone run leaving a runner stranded at 2nd base.
Jake Koltermann took the loss throwing all six innings giving up three earned runs and striking out four.
In the nightcap, YC found themselves down four runs after the fourth inning. Yavapai scored two runs in the fifth inning but gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Roughriders scored two more runs to make the score 6-4, but the opponent scored one more to secure the victory.
Chandler Eden got the loss despite striking out nine batters in five innings.
Yavapai continues this road conference swing on Tuesday, February 17th at Cochise College, the defending Region Champions, in an afternoon twin bill. Yavapai will return to the friendly confines of Roughrider Park on Wednesday, February 18th for a non-conference affair against Thompson Rivers University, Canada. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
