Baseball Starts 2015 with a Double Header Sweep
The Roughrider baseball team swept a season opening doubleheader over Salt Lake Community College Sunday afternoon, 5-2 and 7-5. The games were played at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley.
In the opener, Brock Hartley hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break 2-2 tie and Reza Aleaziz shut the door in the top of the seventh to give the Riders their first victory of 2015 season.
Alexis Olmeda began the scoring for the home team with a solo homer in the Roughrider’s third. Marco Jaime had a hit and an RBI for Yavapai.
Jake Koltermann got the nod in the first game and pitched a strong 5 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits while striking out four. Aleaziz pitched the final two innings for the victory surrendering 1 run on 3 hits with 1 strike out.
In the nightcap, the Roughriders came from behind scoring five runs in the final three innings. Going into the bottom of the sixth inning, YC took advantage of a fielding error to score three runs to knot the game at 5.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Luke Doyle led the inning off with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Willie Calhoun scored on a passed ball for the insurance run.
Akoni Arriaga threw 2.2 innings for the victory and Nicko Ortega threw the final inning for the save.
Calhoun and Hartley each had two hits including a home run. Austin Paschke was 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a home run.
YC returns to the diamond on Monday, February 2nd against Salt Lake for an afternoon twinbill. The venue for the games has yet to be determined. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
