Surprise End to Yavapai Soccer Season

The Roughrider soccer was upset in the NJCAA Region I Playoffs Thursday night at Ken Lindley Field by Phoenix College, 2-1 in overtime. Yavapai’s season concludes with a 20-1-2 overall record and 18-0-2 conference record.

Phoenix drew first blood late in the first half taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. The score remained the same until Daniel Kelly found the net with 2:35 remaining in the game. Regulation ended with the game tied. In overtime, Phoenix got the game winner two minutes into the extra period.

The nation’s number one-ranked junior college soccer team will not get the chance to win their eighth national title on its home turf. The NJCAA National Tournament will take place in Prescott and Prescott Valley on Nov. 18-23. With the completion of their 26th season of competition, Yavapai College all-time record now stands at 555-47-26/.904 winning percentage. The Roughriders previously won three national titles in Trenton, New Jersey, three in Tyler, Texas and the most recent one in Phoenix, Arizona.
